Fashion Consort is excited to announce the production of an original podcast At This Very Moment, a candid conversation between a romantic couple that captures the state of their relationship—their connection—in real time. We feature all relationship configurations that represent a wide diversity of age, race, gender, and sexual orientations. The studio becomes a safe place to share a broad range of emotions, in order to tell a story that is uniquely theirs.

The podcast is scheduled to be released in late spring, 2020 on Stitcher, Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

We are currently hosting an Open Call for all participants. If you are interested in sharing your relationship story, please click here.

Why a podcast on relationships?

As an agency with a primary focus on fashion and lifestyle businesses and consumers, it may seem a bit odd, on the surface, to produce a podcast on romantic relationships. And yet, the idea came as we were discussing recent shifts towards brands becoming more than just a product and service, but an actual community, in some cases replacing more traditional organizations such as religious groups. (Read our recent article “A Search for Identity.”) We questioned what other areas have been affected by this change in communities for Millenial and Gen Z customers and determined that romantic relationships have also been shifting.

In a recent blog post, Esther Perel, famed psychoanalyst and host of the podcasts “Where Do We Begin?” and “How’s Work” questions:

“Is it any wonder that, tied up in relying on a partner for compassion, reassurance, sexual excitement, financial partnership, etc. that we end up looking to them [our partners] for identity or, even worse, for self-worth?”

In her book, Mating in Captivity, she states: “Today, we turn to one person to provide what an entire village once did: a sense of grounding, meaning, and continuity. At the same time, we expect our committed relationships to be romantic as well as emotionally and sexually fulfilling.”

This got us thinking about how relationships have become a bit like brands, where our expectations have become outsized, and ultimately doomed to failure from the weight of it all. That while there is a need to find connection and a common community in such a fragmented world, that we can’t put all of our proverbial eggs “in one basket.”

Our continued conversation also unearthed similarities between brands and relationships in a world driven social media, where authenticity and transparency—warts and all—is often supplanted with carefully curated narratives that are more fiction than reality. Perhaps learning more about our romantic relationships could also unearth bigger truths. And so the idea for “At This Very Moment” was born.

Ultimately, this podcast isn’t about market research. We have no plans to leverage interviews into sellable, training tools. Rather, this podcast is an opportunity to capture people in a short moment of time, sharing what makes their relationship so special, difficult and worthwhile. If anything, we want to show that every person is unique and that perhaps there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to how we approach love, life and community. It’s just another way for us to share conversations that we hope will challenge our own perspectives and unite us together.
