A few months ago, I did a shoot with Ejaz Khan at a great old mansion, turned “long stay” inn in Montclair, New Jersey. I had seen the building from the street before and noticed the beautiful stained glass window on the back. That was enough to get my attention. I popped in for a look one night and was really taken in by the beautiful foyer with the
classic center stairway and the window behind it. What was even more exciting was this grandeur overrun somewhat by a 1970s/1980s redo. The place was by no means dirty, more “used” and I loved the juxtaposition between 150 years old and 20 years old. (Someday, I suppose, we’ll also be inspired again by 80s interior design; we’ve certainly seen fashion recycle the 80s in a big way this past year.) Instantly, it was like grand hotel meets Jersey motel.
The location was perfect for a weekend away story and I immediately thought that the story would really come alive by adding luxe lingerie pieces to the mix–another layer. The first two designers I called were Bela’s Dead in London and Strumpet & Pink in Scotland. Both designers are consummate artists. Bela’s Dead features beautiful “hunt scene” and “poison apple” silk screens and embroideries (Adam & Eve anyone?), and Strumpet & Pink offers delicious, frothy pieces full of ruching, ribbons, peek holes, silk covered buttons…and more. I paired these with great pieces by Lyell NYC, Eres, Petit Bateau, Sonia Rykiel for H&M and D&G.
Dannilyn, our model, gave the overall shoot a sense of insouciance, innocence and sexiness.
